Cellulosic Ethanol
POET is proud to be a pioneer in unlocking the power of cellulosic ethanol.
Our twenty years of ethanol production experience has enabled us to turn biomass into fuel with remarkable efficiency. Traditionally, we've used corn as the primary ingredient in the production of ethanol. The next frontier is cellulosic ethanol - ethanol made from plant materials like corn stalks, switch grass, wood chips and even refuse. Today, we're poised to be one of the first to produce cellulosic ethanol on a commercial scale in Emmetsburg, Iowa.
Unlike today's ethanol, in which sugars and starches are the main materials, or "feedstock," used in production, cellulosic ethanol's raw material is cellulose from other plant sources.
Cellulose is the main component of plant cell walls and is the most common organic compound on earth. It is more difficult to breakdown cellulose to its basic components in order to convert them into ethanol, but our ability to do it efficiently will radically expand the range of materials that can be used for ethanol production.
Although cellulosic ethanol is chemically identical to the ethanol we make from corn, the processes for handling the raw material feedstock, breaking it down and fermenting it pose serious biochemical and engineering challenges. That's where POET's Project LIBERTY comes in.
