Power of Ethanol - IndyCar Series

When winning means an edge of hundredths of seconds racing at 230 miles per hour, you'd better have an engine running at peak performance.

That's the simple demand of the men and women of the Indy Racing League. So it was a remarkable endorsement of the power of ethanol when, in 2007, the IRL made 100% pure ethanol the official fuel for the IndyCar Series.

The 2007 Ethanol Movement
The message is simple: if, as the league points out, a 650-horsepower race car that covers the length of a football field in one second can achieve maximum performance on pure ethanol, so can your car.

The IndyCar Series is the first and only motorsports race series to run on pure fuel grade ethanol, a move that establishes both the performance capabilities of ethanol and the leadership of the IndyCar Series, which continues to blaze the trail in motorsports safety, technology and responsibility with this environmentally friendly domestic fuel.

The relationship between ethanol and Indy goes back to 2005, when the newly formed Ethanol Promotion and Information Council (EPIC) notched its first major victory by reaching an agreement with the Indy Racing League to convert all IRL race cars first to E10, a 10 percent blend of ethanol with 90 percent gasoline, in 2006, then to E100, 100 percent ethanol, in 2007.

Paul Dana, 1975-2006
Ethanol had already made in-roads with the IRL when EPIC sponsored an Indy car, thanks to the efforts of driver Paul Dana. On the heels of the 9/11 attacks on the United States, Dana approached Broin and other industry leaders about using ethanol to promote energy independence. Even after his death in a 2006 racing accident, Dana is hailed as the hero who brought clean-burning, renewable ethanol to the race league and a national spotlight.

Along with Rahal Letterman Racing, POET partners with EPIC to sponsor #17 Ethanol Honda/Panoz with driver Ryan Hunter-Reay finishing out the remainder of the 2007 season. Hunter-Reay joins Rahal Letterman Racing with numerous wins and awards including Rookie of the Year. He became the first American rookie in 20 years to win a CART race with a victory in Australia in 2003, then set a series record by leading all 250 laps in a 2004 victory at The Milwaukee Mile. Hunter-Reay made 43 starts over three seasons with two wins, one pole and 18 top 10s. He has spent the past two seasons running part-time in the Rolex Grand American Series.
