Those of us on the ground might not discern the difference, but to the pilots and crew of the Vanguard, which is the world's only 100% ethanol powered aerobatic air fleet, ethanol makes the flying just a little friendlier - and a lot more thrilling.

Longtime advocates of ethanol in aviation, the Vanguard Squadron travels the country performing daring stunts for audiences at air shows and other events to demonstrate the performance power of ethanol. The Squadron includes four veteran aerobatic pilots flying experimental Van RV-3A airplanes that have run on ethanol since 1993.

Ethanol makes a great aviation fuel because it is low in vapor-pressure and high in octane. It only takes a few minutes watching the punishment the Squadron puts its planes through to appreciate that ethanol delivers high performance for high adrenaline stunt flying.
