Power of Ethanol - On the Water
When you're pulling as many as 30 water-skiers doing world-class stunts - people who put their safety your hands - you make sure your boat delivers power, performance and control. The Catfish Bay Water-ski Show in Sioux Falls, South Dakota does it with ethanol.
Billed as "The Greatest Show on H20," the Catfish Bay crew, whose members have gone on to perform in Sea World, Cyprus Gardens, Japan and Brazil, has used ethanol successfully since 1993.
Using a twin pair of Mercury 200 EFI outboard engines running on E10 (10 percent) ethanol, the team's boat proves ethanol and marine engines are more than compatible. Not only does every boat in the show's fleet use E10 ethanol, the team often uses E85, the 85 percent ethanol blend, to get more power from its engines on hot, humid summer days: ethanol absorbs humidity better and burns cooler than conventional gasoline.
For some boaters with older motors, it may be necessary to make some simple modifications to their engines by using aluminum or plastic fuel tanks, or by adjusting carburetors or electronic fuel injection systems. As the Catfish Bay boat demonstrates, ethanol delivers terrific performance - with an environmentally friendly, biodegradable, non-toxic source of fuel.
